Keith Viewing grew up in the UK and joined Rhodesian Selection Trust Group, 1952, in mineral exploration and mining geology for 12 years until the Zambian copper mines were nationalised. Following his Doctorate through Imperial College on a geochemical project in Sierra Leone, Keith joined the Ministry of Mines in this country and later was the inaugural Director of the Institute of Mining Research (IMR) at the University, Harare. He successfully developed and ran IMR for 20 years. He then moved to Anglo American as a consultant until he retired. For 16 years afterwards he was an independent consultant within Sub-Saharan Africa. He spent the last few years of his life in Italy.
He was a great inspiration and friend to many and continued to contribute his knowledge to the mining industry right up to the end.
